New Year’s Resolutions

HAPPY 2010! It’s January-we all just rang in the New Year and like many individuals; I decided to conduct my annual “New Year’s Resolution”. I am not sure what it is about the start of a new year, but many people across the globe decide it is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start of new ideas. I am included in this majority.

After 9 short, warm hours of waiting in the New York City’s Times Square I watched the famous ball dropped (Yes, instead of watching this occur from the comfort of my own home-this year-I decided to catch the live show). The clock FINALLY struck midnight and I watched the confetti fall from the sky as Broadway blasted Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York”. For that moment, the numbness of my legs subsided and I realized that after all the hours of frigid temperatures and freezing rain, it was worth it.

It was in that moment I decided that I need to stop and “smell the roses”.
In the words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” We all need to take time to stop and look around. Working a full time job in New York City’s fast pace fashion industry and being a full time graduate student-I often don’t have much time to enjoy the simple, little things in life. As a result, my New Year’s Resolution was going to be to take 10 minutes each day to stop and smell the roses.

Sounds simple enough… However like millions and millions and American’s I have been prone to not sticking to my resolutions. How I am going to accomplish this goal?

Research says it takes 21 days to establish a habit. HabitForge.com is a free website where you enter your desired goal and or habit. Each day you receive an email asking you whether you met your goal. If you answer “No”, it will start over at day 1. The goal is to make it to 21 days of saying “Yes”. To win, you must reach 21 days. If you keep answering “no”, you’ll never get to 21. If you do get to 21 days, congratulations, you’ve just formed a new habit.

Habit Forge is a great way to accomplish your goals…let’s see how I do!
